Animals
Apenheul is home to over 30 primate species and more than 300 primates in total! To find out which primates live in Apenheul, take a look at our Primates-ABC.
The primates that live in Apenheul were nearly all born in a zoo. We cooperate with zoos worldwide and exchange animals with each other to keep the animal populations in zoos healthy.
All primates are given a special primates diet that differs per species. Most primates eat a lot of vegetables, such as endive, chicory and carrots, and there are a few fervent leaf-eaters among the ranks. Callithrichids and squirrel monkeys also love nice, crunchy insects.
Many people think that primates eat a lot of bananas, but nothing could be further from the truth. Bananas are not good for primates —they contain a relatively high amount of sugars and little fibre.
If primates are being moved to another zoo, we prefer to take them there by car. A caretaker usually accompanies them so that the primates see a familiar face during the journey and the first days in their new home. Moving house can be quite exciting!
Primates’ life expectancy varies between species. Gorillas, orangutans and bonobos can live up to 45–50 years in zoos. Squirrel monkeys live to be about 20 years old. A Golden lion tamarin is already considered very old at 14 years old.
No, even the animal caretakers do not pet the primates. Primates do not like being stroked or touched at all; it makes them feel threatened, so we just let the animals do their thing.

Apenheul is a very unique park where visitors enter areas with free-roaming primates. Therefore, dogs are not allowed inside our park to protect the wellbeing of both the animals and the visitors. To still offer visitors who are dependent on a service dog a chance to visit Apenheul, we offer the chance for them to bring in one handler with them for free. The visitor can purchase a regular entry ticket through our webshop and present this on the day itself, along with an official service dog certificate and proof of identity to grant a free entry for one guardian.
You’ll find bathrooms at multiple locations in Apenheul: close to the entry/exit and near all our food & beverage outlets. Adapted bathrooms and rooms for nursery are also available at every location. The exact locations of all bathrooms can be found on the park map.
Only when you are in possession of a valid disability parking ticket (“gehandicaptenparkeerkaart”) you are able to park at one of the 12 extra spacious parking spots. Allowed or not allowed
Strollers are allowed in Apenheul. You can use them throughout the park, including in the areas with free-roaming primates.
At the entrance to Park Berg & Bos you will find a bicycle parking area. This parking is unguarded. You can park your bike here for free. Please note that parking your bike in Park Berg & Bos is not allowed. It is also not allowed to park your bike at the entrance of Apenheul.
Balance bikes, as well as skateboards and rollerblades, are not allowed in Apenheul. Is the use of a balance bike necessary for you for medical reasons? Please contact our visitor reception in that case.
Of course, you can film and photograph to your heart's content in Apenheul. Just be careful of loose parts of your equipment, because the monkeys are lightning fast and can run off with it. Commercial use of images taken in Apenheul is not allowed.
Dogs and other pets are not allowed in Apenheul. A large proportion of our animals roam freely among visitors. The presence of (domestic) animals poses a possible risk of infection and can cause startle reactions between the animals. This can cause dangerous situations, especially for the (domestic) animals. Unfortunately, we cannot allow service dogs in Apenheul for this reason, read more about that here. We urge you not to leave your dog in the car. Near Apeldoorn you will find several shelters and pensions with day care for dogs.
